Guardians of the Galaxy: The holiday special is Marvel Studios' second special presentation after Night Werewolf, showing that these shorter hour—long specials can remain a seasonal tradition for the MCU. Peter Quill, also known as Star Lord, has not yet recovered from the events of Avengers: Infinity War. The death of his beloved Gamora at the hands of Thanos, as well as the realization that he could have prevented a five-year disappearance if he had not allowed rage to get the better of him, led him to deep despair depression, knowing that there is a second Gamora from another timeline where they never met, did not improve the situation.

Quill's Guardian friends notice Peter's mood and try to find a way to cheer him up. Kraglin mentions that Christmas is just around the corner on Earth, so Mantis, Drax are hatching a plan to arrange for Peter what will probably be his first Christmas holiday since he was abducted by the Reavers. This plan includes what fans have been desperate to see for a long time: the Guardians explore the Earth, and Mantis, Drax head to Hollywood to convince/kidnap Kevin Bacon, the star of Peter's favorite movie "Free."..
