Kara Zor-El is Superman's cousin, yet that's about all she shares with him. Unlike Clark, who was born on Earth and serves as a hero to many people, Kara witnesses the destruction of her planet and is not willing to become the perfect heroine. As soon as a deadly foe gets too close for comfort, Kara takes off into space with an unlikely travel companion. It's a tale of revenge, grief, and trying to figure out who one really is. The movie is adapted from the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book, but it deviates greatly from the usual Superman stories.

The major point where the movie stands out is the tone. The plot does not revolve around the idealized character who always makes the right decisions. Here, the main protagonist is much more of a quick-tempered, mouthy and contradictory person. According to Millie Alcock herself, the character has a lot of trauma and internal struggle and, as such, the movie makers made the movie more like a space movie and a road movie rather than a typical superhero movie.
